Should writing be personal?

I have battled with this question several times. I pour through my ideas and desires, start to write and over-think it to the point that I lose all inspiration. Today, I will break this cycle. I intend to write something personal; I will pick one of the many thoughts flowing through my mind and push myself to put these personal feelings, beliefs, and experiences into a story.

I challenge you all to do the same, push yourself in some unexpected way today. My story for today may never be published, but I know it will cause me to grow as a writer.

Happy Creating!!

AuthorStand. Death of Jane

So many ideas, so little time

I love this new hobby of mine, writing. I can hardly believe it most days; the thrill of creating, sharing my ideas and characters with others is intoxicating. I have spent years convincing myself that I was not creative, I couldn't create, I could just sit back, envious of those in my life that had creative talent. I remember the little snippet of creative writing in my high school english class and how the "c" word terrified me.

Now for the past few years, I have been struggling with finding some kind of an outlet. I thought I was just miserable with my job; that I needed to take my life in a whole new direction. I went through numerous hobbies; painting, sewing, cake decorating/baking and as I watched my waist line increase and my happiness decrease, I continued to struggle with what was missing from my life.

I have read since I was little; awestruck that these amazing authors could create a new world. One day, after reading a particularly addictive story, I decided to put some of my own thoughts down on paper, making myself a promise that I would not tell anyone. I toyed with it, made up characters, imagined how they would live, their personalities. I was happy enough, but very insecure. I posted on Facebook one afternoon that I hoped to write some that day and that one post changed my life. A woman that I worked with years ago saw my posting and emailed me asking about writing. She writes as well and we have become friends through this adventure; creating and sharing, both giddy with excitement at the shared "writers high" we experience from time to time. Here's hoping this continues, that I am able to keep this passion for words alive within me and share my world with others.
